Words for your baby and toddler: Pre-K Vocabulary Building
The First Words line and the activities that go with it will help your child move past goo goo ga ga and begin learning words that will help advance their development so that they can be higher achievers later in life.
Early language development experts the have found that the more quality exposure to words that infants ages 0-3 have the more likely they are to score higher on reading tests and be more proficient with language as they mature.
Susan Neuman and Julie Dwyer’s study of Vocabulary Instruction in Pre-K, “Children who scored highest in reading and math at age 10 were reported to have heard 45 million words form birth to age 3, or about 30,000 words per day, compared with those children who scored lowest, at 13 million words. Trends in the amount of talk—the actual trajectory of vocabulary growth—and the styles of interaction were well established at 3 years old.”
Speech Language Development expert Kelley Henry advises parents not to overlook the importance of the goo goo ga ga stage. “We don't want to down play goo goo ga ga because it is a very important step of language development called babbling. In babbling you will notice that your child's intonation patterns, consonant-vowel usage and sentence structure/syllables will mimic those models in the child's life.”
Being a model for your baby is important whether it’s modeling sounds or whole words and sentences. “This imitation is one of the precursor skills to effective expressive language and that a lot of times parents can derive meaning.”
Experimenting with and imitating sounds and syllables is an important part of speech and language development, and it helps minimize communicative frustration, too.
However, while your infant may be saying goo goo ga ga she or he is hearing everything that you are saying. So, the more quality words you can expose your children to, and the more direct interaction you can have with your child while using a rich array of quality words, the more opportunity you give her brain to soak in new information and grow!
